Australian Kingfishers

Australian Kingfishers

Kingfishers Alcedinidae

There are around a 80 species of kingfishers found all around the world, of which Australia has 10 species. The Kingfishers of Australia are spectacular, colorful small to medium sized birds, appearing in a wide range of habitats. They live primarily in wooded habitats, often near water. Although they are called "fishers", not all kingfishers are specialized fishers. Some species do consume primarily fish, but most species have diets that include significant number of insects. Kingfishers have large heads and long, sharp, pointed bills. Most of the Kingfishers in Australia are brightly colored. The Laughing Kookaburra is the largest species of kingfisher.

I have put up my Kingfisher page after being beating up by our daughter Christine, complaining they were not here.
