Greater Sooty Owl Tyto tenebricosa

The Greater Sooty Owl (Rußeule for my German friends) is sooty-blackish with fine silvery spots. It has very large black eyes in a round facial disc, which is surrounded by dark edge. The upper-parts of the owl are dark sooty blackish-brown, with fine white spots on the body. The body length varies from 35-45 cm. The female bird is the bigger animal having a wingspan of about 100 cm. Like many other owls, the birds have large feet and strong talons.

The Greater Sooty Owl is a Tyto Owl, living in New Guinea and the south-eastern parts of Australia. This Owl lives a secret life and is most often only detected by its very characteristic calls (to hear an example use the player below).
