Southern Boobook Ninox boobook

The Southern Boobook (Ninox boobook) is the smallest Australian Owl with 4 sub-species in Australia and originally considered to be the same species as the New Zealand Morepork. In the meantime it has been split and is now treated as full species. The name is reflecting its characteristic "boo-book" call (see example below). The Southern Boobook feeds on insects and small vertebrates, which it catches very often from being perched on fence posts or trees. It usually starts breeding in late winter, using tree hollows for nesting .
